Miami is well known as one of the party capitals of the world, but there is much more to the Sunshine City than cocktails and dance floors. High culture is alive and kicking in Miami, with the area boasting a thriving art scene and some incredible museums.

Art in Miami
Set in the tropical climes on the coast of the Atlantic, it is easy to see why Miami provides such inspiration to budding artists. Renowned artists hailing from the area include Harold Bas, the architect Jorge Arango and Christa Hattler, a world famous fashion designer known for her hand made pieces.

In recent times, Miami has become a hotbed of young talent, and the area has developed its own unique sense of artistic style over the years. The city is a cultural melting pot, which is reflected in a fusion of styles that defines the art scene in Miami today. European, Latino and even Asian styles have been a major influence on the artists in the area, not just in the art itself, but also in the architecture and even graffiti on the city’s walls.

The best way to truly absorb the nuances of Miami’s art culture is to explore the numerous galleries in the area, of which there are many, each with a unique feel. Here is an overview of three of the best known galleries in the area:

Art Fusion – This gallery has an emphasis on promoting up and coming/mid level artists from the Miami area. Often showcasing around 30 different artist’s work in its Chelsea-style gallery at any one time, Art Fusion is an extremely dynamic, exciting place to visit.

Virginia Miller – Here, unique artists with highly personal pieces are showcased. The gallery has a strong Latin American influence, which can be seen in much of the work on show. Famous works of art by internationally renowned artists are regularly displayed here, and the gallery has played host to numerous world-famous exhibitions during its 35 years.

The Bakehouse Art Complex – This not-for-profit organisation provides a space for the emerging talent of South Florida to come into bloom. The Bakehouse Art Complex offers affordable studios, exhibition galleries and a plethora of resources to allow aspiring artists to become the best they can – it’s only a matter of time before the ‘next big thing’ rises from this hotbed of talent.

Graffiti Street Art Tours
Not too long ago graffiti was considered a sign of urban decay – not usually the sort of area you’d be taking tourists to see. However, in recent times the surge of interest in street art has made Miami one of the street art capitals of the world. This is why the graffiti of the city is currently the subject of a new tour in one of Miami’s trendiest and most affluent neighborhoods, Wynwood. And just to crank up the cool factor, the informal tour takes place on kitch Vespa scooters!

It is fair to say that where art is concerned, Miami really does have something for everyone, and from galleries to museums, architecture to brick walls, there’s no shortage of visuals on offer.
